Five talented junior cricketers from Walsham-le-Willows Cricket Club are just one day away from earning the opportunity to play at Lord’s after helping their MCC Framlingham Hub teams reach the National Quarter-Finals.
Representing the U13 boys and U16 girls, Macey, Elodie, Albie, Mason and Harry have all played key roles in their teams’ success.
Macey and Elodie made an excellent start to the girls’ campaign with victory over the Norfolk Hub. Macey opened the batting and scored 29, while Elodie added an unbeaten 18 from the middle order. They followed that up with another impressive performance against the Derbyshire Hub, with both girls contributing with bat and ball to help secure another win.
For the boys, Albie, who captains the MCC Framlingham U13 Hub side, led from the front in the opening victory over the Cambridgeshire Hub, scoring an excellent 55. Mason also enjoyed an outstanding all-round game, making 24 runs and taking two wickets.
They were joined by Harry for the next match against the Leicestershire Hub. Mason and Harry bowled superbly to help restrict the opposition to 117, with Harry’s energy and bowling backing up his selection for the Midlands Finals. Albie then guided the Suffolk Hub home with a classy unbeaten 81 not out to seal victory and book their place in the National Quarter-Finals.
Both the boys’ and girls’ sides now travel to Beverley, Yorkshire, for the National Quarter-Finals, where they will play two matches. The winners will go through to the National Final at Lord’s on 5 September.
Adam Howe, coach of the Walsham-le-Willows junior section, said:
“All five players should be incredibly proud of themselves for their achievements in this year’s competition. The MCC side is made up of state-educated players from clubs all over Suffolk, and all five of our players go to Thurston Community College, a state school that actually offers cricket to its students.
“Four of the five have been with the club since our All Stars programme, starting at six years of age, with Mas joining us last year. They are all fantastic cricketers but, more importantly, they’re great people who deserve all the luck in the world. Well done, guys.”
Everyone at Walsham-le-Willows Cricket Club is immensely proud of Macey, Elodie, Albie, Mason and Harry and wishes them the very best of luck in Yorkshire as they aim to take the next two steps towards what would be a memorable day at Lord’s.
