Cricket Section Update

The humble Annual General Meeting may not be the most celebrated event in the club calendar but it is perhaps the most important gathering outside of a matchday. Despite this significance, past instances have required the lure of sub continental cuisine in order to boost attendances into double figures, but such is the nature of the club and its members at the moment that 23 people were willing to spend their Monday evening pontificating and voting on the people and processes that will take the club forward through the 2025 season.

Most roles remained with the incumbent occupant but there was one noteworthy change as long serving chairman Rick Meyer passed the baton on to Howard Gilbert. The club has seen an enormous amount of positive change through Rick’s 10 years at the helm with a long list of new playing and grounds equipment, the resurgence of the youth section and the addition of second Saturday league team to name but a few notable accomplishments. The club is in a better place on all fronts than it was when Rick took charge and this means we are well positioned to make further strides under Howard’s leadership.

On the playing side, Steve Moulton and Ben Clark joined Warwick Izzard in taking on captaincy roles having only joined the club since the covid pandemic whilst George Macrae joins Theo Cass as the latest youth section graduate to shoulder some match day responsibility. George also recently completed his ECB Core Coaches course, building on the hard work he has put in on Friday nights coaching the juniors throughout this year.

In other news, the Two Counties league have finalised the Division structure for the 2025 season and, most importantly, confirmed that the 2nd XI have been promoted to Division 8B. This does mean that they will have slightly further to travel for away matches but that may be offset by the arrival of a local derby for the 1st XI as Bardwell join us in Division 3 after their promotion.

A full list of teams and divisions can be seen on the Two Counties website.

On a more sombre note, we were saddened to learn last week that Sarah Gleeson, whose sons Rupert & Oscar are two of the brightest young bowlers in our junior section, has been diagnosed suddenly with Leukemia. A friend of the family has organised a go fund me page to support the family at this difficult time and any donation you can make will help support a very deserving family through a very difficult time.

Just because there is no cricket being played at the moment does not mean there are no jobs to do and as such, there will be a work party at the club this Saturday, 26th October between 9am and 11am to make sure all of the cricket equipment is tidied away and stored correctly for the winter. Many hands make light work so any time you can give would be greatly appreciated. As the dark November evenings swiftly approach you can brighten your diary with the following events at the club:

Friday 25th October – Fancy Dress Hallowe’en Party – Free Entry

Saturday 16th November – Gordon’s Race Night – Free Entry

Friday 22nd November – Comedy Night – Tickets

Friday 29th November – Chamonix Aspen – Tickets
