At the end of last week, we were saddened to learn of the passing of former Walsham player Dave Foster.
Dave was not only a well-respected batsman who scored a significant number of runs for the cricket club, but also a PE teacher at Blackbourne Middle School to a number of our current cricketers . He played a pivotal part in the highly successful team of the mid 90s which completed the league and federation cup double and current Chairman Rick Meyer described him as “technically the best batsman the club has ever had”. While the man himself would probably have played down such an accolade, there are many other people in and around Walsham who would say the same.
Dave was an important ingredient of the successful 1st team football squad in the late eighties, anchoring the right side of defence and a calming influence on the whole team. He will also be remembered as an instigator of the Club’s youth football team which involved his son Chris; today’s flourishing youth numbers are a tribute to that early work.
Current Sports Club Treasurer Ian Campbell was involved in the recruitment process for the teaching position that Dave took on, and considers the appointment to be one of his most valuable contributions to the Club. Dave will forever be remembered at Walsham Le Willows Sports Club and we send our deepest condolences to his family.
